Hello, I’m Emma — an artist, textile designer and arts educator based on Scotland’s west coast. My practice is shaped by the rhythm of the seasons and the materials they offer. I spend a lot of time foraging for colour, gathering plants, scraps, and seasonal finds to transform into natural dyes and inks. What I make shifts throughout the year, adapting to what is growing, falling, fading, or flourishing. That cyclical way of working keeps me connected to place and deeply aware of the environmental life around me.
I work across printmaking and textiles, often using slow, experimental processes that draw on craft history and feminist traditions of making. I’m especially interested in low-impact, circular approaches—finding ways to create rich, expressive colour without harmful chemicals or waste. In 2023, I set up my sustainable print studio: a space dedicated to researching plant-based pigments, testing new methods, and sharing these techniques with others.
Teaching and community engagement are central to what I do. I love opening up these processes—showing how colour can be coaxed from everyday plants, how materials change through the seasons, and how hands-on making can build confidence, curiosity, and connection. Whether I’m working with community groups, students, or fellow artists, I aim to make creative learning accessible, welcoming, and grounded in a sense of environmental awareness and care.
My work grows from collaboration, experimentation, and a belief in learning through doing.
